Selective breeding to improve residual feed intake (RFI) in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is a major goal that would optimize economic gain while minimizing the environmental impact of production. Due to the difficulty in accurately measuring individual feed intake, no selective breeding program has yet been started. In a previous study, we identified a criterion phenotypically related to RFI variations: the loss of weight during feed deprivation, FD. Moreover, an additional composite criterion (CC) integrating both FD and weight gain during subsequent re-feeding (RF) was closely related to RFI, even though the relationship was only close to significance (P=0.06). The aim of the present study was to estimate the heritability of these two traits, in order... |

No commercial breeding programs have yet started to improve feed utilization efficiency in fish, mainly because of the difficulty in accurately measuring individual feed intake in fish reared in groups. Our general goal is to propose indirect criteria to be used for breeding of commercial lines. In a previous study undertaken with rainbow trout clones, a genetic correlation was detected between residual feed intake (RFI), and body weight variation during successive periods of feed deprivation (FD) and re-feeding (RF). To assess the pertinence of such indirect criteria for future breeding programs, we set up a large experiment using sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax), a recently domesticated species with broad genetic diversity. The objectives of the present... |

Estimating individual feed intake of fish held in groups has long been a challenge precluding precise knowledge of the individual variation of feed efficiency (FE) in fish. In this study, counts of the number of feed pellets (1.63 mg on average) eaten by individual tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) held in 8 mixed sex groups of 15 fish were measured from video recordings made over a period of 10 days where fish were fed twice daily to achieve compensatory growth after 10 days of fasting. The initial body weight of the fish was 9.77 ± 2.03 g. Accumulated measures of feed intake (FI) over 11 meals were found to achieve 95% repeatability and a high accuracy of estimation of FI. During the FI measurement period, the average fish growth was 12.0 ± 3.6 g, feed... |

Application of DNA parentage assignment for commercial selection in aquaculture is still rare. An experiment was performed to quantify and to minimize maternal effects on growth in rainbow trout. Six hundred families were reared until 198 day post fertilization (dpf) according to two different procedures. In the first procedure (NORM), all families were pooled at eyed stage. In the second procedure (MIN), where maternal effects due to differences in egg size were expected to be minimal, the spawns were divided into sub-groups with similar mean egg weight at eyed stage. These sub-groups were then pooled when they achieved the same mean body length (147 dpf). Genetic parameters were estimated for body weight, body length and condition factor at 198 dpf, with... |

Sea bass is a major species in Mediterranean aquaculture, but has a distribution area ranging from North Atlantic to South Mediterranean, with a population structure previously revealed by population genetics. To test the farming performances of wild sea bass populations, we produced a partial diallel cross mating scheme, using sires originating from North Atlantic (NAT), South Atlantic (SAT), West Mediterranean (WEM), North-East Mediterranean (NEM) and South-East Mediterranean (SEM). Fifteen sires per origin were mated in a full-factorial design using artificial fertilization with 9 NAT dams and 17 WEM dams, producing 10 population crosses and 1950 potential full-sib families. All fish were reared together, then tagged at an average weight of 20 g and... |

Genetic parameters of production traits (growth, carcass yield, fillet yield) and bony tissues (head and vertebral axis) were estimated for large all-female rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss reared in freshwater. Genetic parameters were estimated using REML at 16 months of age (1636 g) on 1962 DNA-assigned progenies from a partial factorial mating design with 60 dams and 100 sex-reversed sires. Most traits presented medium to high heritability (0.37 to 0.54). A high genetic correlation (r(A)=0.97) was found between fillet yield and headless gutted carcass yield (or HGCarc%). Due to its higher heritability and high genetic correlation with fillet yield, selection on HGCarc% should result in a 50% increase in selection efficiency on fillet yield by reducing... |

The specific growth rate (SGR) of a cohort of 2000 tagged juvenile European sea bass was measured in a common tank, during two sequential cycles comprising three-weeks feed deprivation followed by three-weeks ad libitum re-feeding. After correction for initial size at age as fork length, there was a direct correlation between negative SGR (rate of mass loss) during feed deprivation and positive SGR (rate of compensatory growth) during re-feeding (Spearman rank correlation R=0.388, P=0.000002). Following a period of rearing under standard culture conditions, individuals representing 'high growth' phenotypes (GP) and 'high tolerance of feed deprivation' phenotypes (DP) were selected from either end of the SGR spectrum. Static and swimming respirometry could... |

Individual stress coping style (reactive, intermediate and proactive) was determined in 3 groups of 120 pit tagged European seabass using the hypoxia avoidance test. The same three groups (no change in social composition) were then reared according to the standards recommended for this species. Then, 127 days later, individuals initially characterized as reactive, intermediate or proactive were submitted to an acute confinement stress for 30 min. Blood samples were taken to measure plasma cortisol levels 30 min (Stress30) or 150 min (Stress150) after the end of the confinement stress. Individuals were then sacrificed to sample the telencephalon in order to measure the main monoamines and their catabolites (at Stress30 only). Individuals from Stress150 were... |

To face future decrease of marine resources, replacement of fishmeal and fish oil by plant products is nowadays worldwide priority for the aquaculture of carnivorous fish, especially salmonids. Genetic variability has been recently evidenced for growth ability on plant-based diet and pointed out potential genetic gains. In a context of fast feed evolution, this work compares heritabilities of growth parameters between rainbow trout fed with diet containing fish oil and fish meal and fish fed on diet devoid of marine products. Assessment of genotype diet interaction informs on potential family reranking between diets and potential consequences on current breeding programmes. |

Polygenic sex determination (PSD) may show variations in terms of genetic and environmental components between populations of fish species exposed/adapted to different environments. The European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is an interesting model, combining both a PSD system and a genetic subdivision into an Atlantic and a Mediterranean lineage, with genetic substructures within the Mediterranean Sea. Here, we produced experimental progeny crosses (N = 927) from broodstock sampled in four wild populations (North Atlantic, NAT; Western Mediterranean, WEM; North-Eastern Mediterranean, NEM; South-Eastern Mediterranean, SEM). We found less females than males in the progeny, both in the global dataset (32.5%) and within each paternal group (from 25.1% for... |

The optimal conditions for the retention of the second polar body in sea bass eggs were investigated by altering the timing, intensity and duration of application of pressure and cold shocks. Treatment optima for cold shocks were 0-1 degrees C for 15-20 min at 5 min after fertilisation (a.f.) and 8500 psi for 2 min at 6 min a.f. for pressure shocks. Meiogenesis was obtained by fertilising eggs with UV-irradiated homologous sperm (32,000 erg mm(-2)) and pressure or cold shocking eggs as above. 100% triploidy was induced following definition of liable periods for the disruption of the meiotic spindle obtained in gynogenesis. Ploidy investigations were performed on experimental groups by flow-cytometry. Verification of uniparental transmission in meiogens was... |

Background: Improving feed efficiency in fish is crucial at the economic, social and environmental levels with respect to developing a more sustainable aquaculture. The important contribution of genetic improvement to achieve this goal has been hampered by the lack of accurate basic information on the genetic parameters of feed efficiency in fish. We used video assessment of feed intake on individual fish reared in groups to estimate the genetic parameters of six growth traits, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake in 40 pedigreed families of the GIFT strain of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Feed intake and growth were measured on juvenile fish (22.4g mean body weight) during 13 consecutive meals, representing 7days of... |

Sea bass is a major species in Mediterranean aquaculture, and is now being subject to selective breeding programs for faster growth. In terrestrial species, it was demonstrated that fast growth may be linked to a correlated degradation of fitness traits. In this experiment, we evaluated 600 young sea bass from a factorial mating of 76 sires and 13 dams. The sires were from four genetic groups, wild (W), domesticated (D), and selected for growth (2 groups, M and P). The 600 offspring were submitted to two acute confinement stress challenges at 6 weeks intervals, and plasma cortisol at one hour post stress was measured. The same fish were also submitted to two swimming challenges at a 5 days interval, where the maximum sustained swimming speed (Umax) of each... |
